Hurricane Sandy— Updated
Updated Post with Message from the OU
Hurricane Sandy has left much damage and destruction in its wake. We will be all be impacted by its after effect to one degree or another.  In the meantime, we should all focus our attention to what we can do to help the millions who still don’t have power and are dealing with terrible financial loss.  Hurricane Sandy hit many of the most densely populated Jewish areas and I’m sure many of us have family who were profoundly effected.  One step that we can all take is to offer whatever financial assistance we can to help the victims, especially the most vulnerable, in this time of need.
Please see below for information from our local Federation for national Jewish relief efforts as well as a message from the Orthodox Union with information relating to the many OU communities that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Message from Jewish Federation of Kansas City

http://jewishkansascity.org/Newsletters/Thank-You/Thank-You-6.aspx

Hurricane Sandy, a storm of unprecedented magnitude, struck the Eastern portion of the United States. The Jewish community and the Jewish Federation Movement send our support and prayers to those affected by the hurricane, and we will stand beside them during the recovery and rebuilding.

Donate Now to Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund

JFNA is working with Jewish Federations across the United States – including Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City – to provide aid to contribute to recovery and rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Message from the Orthodox Union

Dear Friend:

“We are at a loss for words,” was our reaction after touring the Jewish
communities around Far Rockaway and Woodmere in New York. Hundreds of
families are literally homeless, having escaped only with the proverbial
clothing on their backs. Furniture, wedding albums and baby blankets are
piled outside homes for the garbage heap. There is devastation everywhere.
We toured two of the thousands of ravaged homes, both looking beautiful on
the outside, but inside the water level reached into the first floor of the
house, after completely flooding the basement. Each house was being gutted
to the studs, to remove mold, and all the furniture was gone. Beautiful
pictures of smiling families are still hanging on the remaining walls, but
now these families are despondent and don’t know what to do.

Hurricane Sandy was a catastrophic, havoc-wreaking nightmare that left
behind wreckage, destruction, and loss of life.  The storm surged and
powerful winds ravaged entire neighborhoods, ripped down trees, left
millions without power for over a week, devastated homes, and flooded shuls.
The hurricane maliciously pummeled through NY and NJ, having no mercy on the
hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who literally ran for their
lives. It also hit at the heart of thriving OU communities, in Far Rockaway,
Woodmere, Oceanside, Merrick, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach and others.

We are appealing to you to, as Presidents of congregations, to encourage
your congregants to give generously to the OU Hurricane Relief Fund.

We have determined that funds will be distributed directly to the Rabbanim
of the impacted communities, for them to distribute to their members, either
as a loan, or as direct cash assistance. We have an OU committee established
to carefully monitor the fund. 100 percent of the proceeds from this  fund
will go directly to those in need. The Rabbis are currently being bombarded
with financial requests from their members, and our assistance will go
directly to help those families. Some families are struggling to meet day to
day needs, other need funds to rebuild their homes and their lives. Funding
is needed now to help them, and we must all respond quickly.

We thank you for your support of our efforts. Please call us if you have
any questions.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Steven Weil                                       Rabbi Judah Isaacs
